How to Connect Your Camera to the Microscope?

The microscope camera is used to take sample pictures in the microscope observation. It needs to be placed on different types of microscopes through special adapters, and connected to imaging devices such as mobile phones, computers, and tablets through different data interfaces to achieve the purpose of real-time display of samples in the imaging device. At the same time, the sample image of each observation is captured by the camera, so that the picture and video data can be well saved. The microscope camera can also do image measurement and image analysis, which will be of great help to daily inspection, inspection work, manufacturing, scientific research and paper writing.

There are three common ways to connect a microscope camera to a microscope:

1. The microscope camera is connected to the trinocular head through C-mount.

C-mount is the standard interface of the trinocular microscope. The diameter of the thread is 1 inch (25.4 mm), which can be directly connected to the trinocular microscope.

As shown in Picture 1: Attach the C-mount camera and Adapter to the straight photo tube.

2. The microscope camera is connected to the trinocular tube through a relay lens (reduction lens, eyepiece adapter).

The diameter of the tube is 23.2 mm. It needs to be connected via a relay lens.

As shown in Picture 2: Attach the C-Mount camera and Adapter to the trinocular tube(23.2mm).

3. The microscope camera is connected to the eyepiece tube of the binocular microscope through a relay lens (reduction lens, eyepiece adapter).

First you need to take out the eyepiece, then plug the camera into the eyepiece tube via relay lens. In some cases, the direct tube of the eyepiece is 30 mm, you need to add an adapter ring.

As shown in Picture 3:

C-mounts have different magnifications. They are generally provided by microscope factories. Our company can also provide C-mounts for Olympus, Nikon, Zeiss and Leica microscopes. Commonly used C-mount magnification is 1.0X, 0.63X, 0.5X. The choice of C-mount magnification depends on the size of the camera sensor. For example, the sensor size is 1/2 inch, and its field of view is relatively small compared to the eyepiece observation. Select the 0.5X interface to reduce the image captured by the camera by 1/2, which is equivalent to 1 inch * 0.5 = 1/2 inch. In this case, the camera with the 1/2-inch sensor captures an image of a size similar to the size of the field of view observed in the eyepiece.

Selecting the magnification of the relay lens is similar to selecting the magnification of the C-mounts. When the sensor size is 1 inch, the 1X relay lens is generally selected, and the 0.5X relay lens is generally selected for the 1/2-inch sensor.

The picture shows the size of the C-mount and the relay lens and the corresponding sensor size to help you make a better choice.

Size Description of the Connection Parts

1. Standard C-Mount: Dia.1 inch (25.4mm) female thread.

2. Standard C-Mount: Dia.1 inch (25.4mm) male thread.

3. Camera Adapter connector: size varies according to microscope brands.

4. Straight photo tube: size varies according to microscope brands.

5. Relay lens: standard eyepiece connector size, Dia.23.2mm (male).

6. 3rd ocular tube: standard eyepiece connector size, Dia.23.2mm (female).

7. Ocular tube: standard eyepiece connector size, Dia.23.2mm (female).

We can provide relay lenses with different magnifications as well:

23.2mm Eyepiece to C-mount Microscope Eyepiece Adapter (Adjustable), this kind of adapter can be adjusted, so if the image from the camera is not the same steps as eyepiece, you can adjust the relay lens.
